Our Review of the BlackBerry 8110 Blue

This is RIM's attempt to broaden the Blackberry's appeal to the 'man on the street' and we have to say, they've done a good job.

BlackBerries are the king of executive phones, coveted by businesspeople up and down the land ever since they came on the market. They are brilliant for people on the move who need instant access to email wherever they are. However, the BlackBerry's specialist focus and limited features (no camera, for example) could be off-putting for many consumers.

But at last there's some good news in the shape of the BlackBerry 1880 Pearl. This is RIM's attempt to broaden the BlackBerry's appeal to the average 'man on the street' and we have to say, they've done a good job.

Aesthetically, the Pearl 8110 is identical to its predecessor, the Pearl 8100. It is available in black, blue and pink, giving this business-focused smartphone a fun and colourful look. While the original design is sleek, it would be nice to see some distinguishing features. The Pearl's large screen displays up to sixty five thousand colours and has a screen resolution of 240x260 pixels.

The most interesting feature of the Pearl 8110 is the GPS function which is a fully-fledged sat-nav enabling you to find your way around wherever you are in the UK.

The 8110 is the first BlackBerry to incorporate a camera, albeit at a bare-bones 2 megapixels. The photos come out pretty blurred, though a built in flash helps you to take snaps in the dark. The 8110 comes with 64 megabytes of internal memory which can be further expanded with a microSD card.

The thumbwheel has been replaced by a rolling white ball located below the vivid 2.2” screen, which lights up when you use it. The QWERTY keyboard remains, but this time it is split over half the number of keys. This takes some getting used to but once you have the hang of it you’ll never want to return to a numerical keypad. A keyboard backlight ensures you won’t be fumbling around for the correct keys in the dark. Accessing menus and applications with the keyboard is quick and easy.

Unlike the 8120 there is no Wi-Fi, and the lack of 3G means that accessing the internet can be a plodding affair. Like 'traditional' BlackBerries, the Pearl 8110 acts as an extension of your inbox, allowing you to send and receive emails on the move. The phone supports many email attachments types, including MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents and JPG, GIF, BMP, PNG and TIF images, meaning you can access your emails properly wherever you are. Bluetooth technology allows you to connect your phone with other compatible devices and transfer data wirelessly. A USB cable port is also available for wired data transfer. A fully charged battery will provide up to 360 hours of standby time and 4 hours talk-time.

The 8110 comes with comes with a built-in microphone for recording voice messages and reminders. An integrated loud speaker is used when the phone is in hands-free mode – essential if you wish to use your phone while driving or to create an impromptu conference call. MP3 and polyphonic ringtones are available.

 Pros

Built in GPS; QWERTY keyboard with SureType Software; wireless email with attachments.

 Cons

No radio or 3G.
